Enrico Dandolo's Blindness

The cause of Dandolo's blindness is unclear. After the Fourth Crusade, there were rumors that he was blinded by the emperor when he expelled a Venetian merchant in Byzantium in 1171. However, this interpretation is clearly problematic, as Dandolo continued to do business and sign documents in 1171.

In Venice, it is illegal for blind people to sign documents.

According to Thomas Madden's research, Dandolo's blindness may have come from a back-brain impact between 1174 and 1176. The documents show that the documents signed by Dandolo in 1174 were completely readable, but the documents in 1176 were cluttered, indicating that his vision had gradually deteriorated.

Considering his age, it is not uncommon for older people to be blind at the time
